Beulah's Success Story

"The best Mother's Day Gift ever!"
- Beulah

From Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Little Rock

Beulah came to Cornerstone Little Rock for ventilator and tracheostomy (trach) weaning. She initially suffered complications from a prior procedure and had to be sent back to the previous hospital for correction. When she returned, she was still on a ventilator. Her respiratory therapist shared they had difficulties when trying to wean her from the ventilator due to her anxiety and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and ultimately weren’t successful.

At first, we were also not able to wean her due to anxiety issues. Our team spoke with her and offered encouragement as we explained how vital it was to wean her. Beulah had a positive attitude and decided to work with us as we successfully weaned her to a trach collar. Whenever she became anxious, instead of placing her back on the vent, we would talk to her and reassure her that we would take good care of her.

Beulah was ultimately able to be weaned off the vent and also have her trach removed and got back to her baseline of two liters of oxygen and breathing treatments. She was very grateful and was discharged the Friday before Mother’s Day. She shared, “This is the best Mother’s Day present ever!”

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
