Calvin's Success Story

"I could not have done this without the staff at Cornerstone."
- Calvin

From Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Huntington

Calvin, 45, arrived at the ER via EMS after a cardiac arrest at his home. Calvin’s mother, Patricia, performed resuscitation efforts for 15 minutes until EMS arrived on the scene. Upon arrival to the ER Calvin was intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation. His MRI showed a significant anoxic injury of the brain.

The outlook for recovery at the time was bleak. His family was contemplating the next steps when Calvin miraculously started to respond. At that point, he underwent tracheostomy and PEG tube placement and was sent to Cornerstone Specialty Hospital of Huntington for critical illness recovery.

During his first three weeks at Cornerstone, Calvin was weaned from the ventilator. He was able to have the tracheostomy tube removed and recovered his ability to speak and eat. Calvin continues to progress with therapy and can now walk the hallways.

We appreciate Calvin and his family for allowing Cornerstone Specialty Hospital Huntington to care for him in his time of need.

Care for Complex Conditions

Patients come to our hospitals with serious conditions such as respiratory failure, complex wounds, sepsis, stroke, congestive heart failure, or even a combination of these. Their diagnoses are often complicated by existing health problems like diabetes or COPD. Many of our patients require treatments such as mechanical ventilators, dialysis, or IV therapy.
