Thresia's Success Story
Thresia, who had heart disease and COPD, developed severe respiratory difficulties and septic shock. She was transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospital for ventilator weaning and restorative therapy. After making remarkable progress, Thresia was discharged home.
Thresia had always been a resilient individual, never allowing her existing medical conditions of heart disease and COPD to slow her down. However, one fateful day, she began experiencing concerning symptoms that her husband could not ignore. As he observed changes in her mental status, accompanied by severe respiratory difficulties, he quickly called for emergency medical services. Thresia was rushed to a local hospital in Muskogee, where her condition unexpectedly deteriorated, leading to septic shock. In this critical moment, she was resuscitated and placed on a ventilator to support her breathing.
Thresia spent several days in the ICU, where she made slow yet consistent progress. Recognizing the need for extended care and ventilator weaning, the medical team decided to transfer her to Cornerstone Specialty Hospital. Here, she would receive the specialized attention necessary for her recovery, which included both ventilator weaning and restorative therapy aimed at addressing the deconditioning that often accompanies prolonged bed rest and reliance on medical support for daily activities.
Upon admission, an interdisciplinary team of physicians, pulmonologists, rehabilitation specialists, and nutritionists came together to create a personalized care plan tailored to Thresia’s needs. Despite still being on the ventilator, Thresia was proactive and fully engaged in her recovery process. She understood the importance of the prescribed breathing exercises designed to strengthen her respiratory muscles and improve lung function. These exercises included diaphragmatic breathing and pursed-lip breathing, which helped her manage her breath more effectively. Additionally, Thresia participated in restorative rehabilitation sessions that focused on regaining her strength and independence. With encouragement from her care team, she worked diligently on physical therapy exercises aimed at improving her mobility, endurance, and overall fitness. As her strength grew, she began to perform her activities of daily living with increasing independence, including transferring in and out of bed and walking with a walker.
Eventually, the day arrived when Thresia was liberated from the ventilator. She transitioned to supplemental oxygen, which she had previously used at home, but this time with newfound confidence. Remarkably, she was able to enjoy a regular diet without restrictions and completed her daily activities with independence. She proudly walked over 200 feet using her walker, signaling her significant progress and recovery.
After months of dedication and determination, Thresia was finally discharged home to her loving family. Her journey showcased the power of resilience and the effectiveness of comprehensive medical care and rehabilitation. From the entire care team at Cornerstone, we wish Thresia all the success in her recovery as she embraces life with renewed strength.
