Trevor's Success Story
From Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Broken Arrow
Trevor was out riding his motorcycle when he suddenly had a severe accident. EMS arrived quickly on the scene, but Trevor was having difficulties breathing on his own. The team had to administer a chest tube to release air and drain blood from his lungs at the scene. He was immediately rushed to the local hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU in critical condition. Trevor was placed on a ventilator to support his breathing and was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, multiple fractures of his ribs, pelvis, and spine, as well as lacerations to his face.
After spending several weeks in the ICU at the local hospital, making slow however steady progress, a medical decision was made to transfer Trevor to Cornerstone Specialty Hospital Broken Arrow for extended medical care. This advanced treatment included ventilator weaning and specialized rehabilitation focusing on physical, occupational, and speech therapy programs. Prior to his arrival at Cornerstone, the interdisciplinary team studied Trevor’s medical condition and crafted a personalized care plan. The primary goal was ventilator weaning, as this would significantly improve his overall recovery, along with extensive rehabilitation. Once Trevor was admitted to Cornerstone, he was swiftly transferred to the ICU. The pulmonologist and respiratory team worked diligently with Trevor, using specialized breathing techniques to strengthen his lung performance and capability. Within three weeks of admission, the respiratory team successfully liberated Trevor from the ventilator.
Once off the ventilator, Trevor’s motivation soared to new heights. Despite spending months bed-bound, Trevor never gave up but had a long way to go to regain his strength. Trevor's physical therapy focused on rebuilding his muscular endurance and mobility. His therapists implemented a progressive exercise regimen that included strength training, balance exercises, and mobility drills. Trevor began with passive range-of-motion exercises and gradually moved to active exercises, eventually working on standing and walking with assistance. As his strength improved, he transitioned to using a walker. Occupational therapy sessions helped Trevor regain his daily living skills. Therapists worked with him on activities such as dressing, bathing, and grooming. They also introduced adaptive techniques and tools to help him perform these tasks independently. Trevor practiced fine motor skills through tasks like buttoning shirts and using utensils, which improved his coordination and dexterity.
Speech therapy played a crucial role in Trevor’s recovery, addressing the cognitive and communication challenges resulting from his traumatic brain injury. The speech therapist worked with Trevor on improving his speech clarity, language comprehension, and cognitive-communication skills. Passing all goals set in his care plan, Trevor was discharged to a specialty neuro facility to continue improving his cognitive ability and strengthening his muscular endurance. From the entire team at Cornerstone, we wish Trevor all the success in his recovery.
